Not all filters fit all masks so it’s important you check which masks a filter is compatible with. In general, P2 (P2R and P2RC) particulate filters are suitable for use with mechanically or thermally generated particulates or both e.g. metal fumes.
P3 (P3R and P3RC) particulate filters are suitable for use with highly toxic or high irritant contaminants such as silica dust or asbestos fibres. For P3 filter classification a full-face mask is required when using a non-powered respirator. When P3 filters are used with a half mask the protection factor is equivalent to a P2 filter.
Gas and vapour cartridges are generally Class 1, making them suitable for environments with <1000 ppm of contaminant. Some Class 2 filters are available which are suitable for higher concentrations up to 5000ppm.
If you’re working in an environment with both particulate and gas/vapour contaminants you will need a combination filter. This can be achieved by connecting a P2RC (P2) or P3RC (P3) filter to any of the Shigematsu gas/vapour cartridges or using a combined filter in the CleanAIR range.
