Fire Retardant Coveralls

Fire Retardant and Fire Resistant Coveralls

In environments where flash fire or arc flash is a credible hazard, standard coveralls offer no meaningful protection. A purpose-rated fire retardant suit or fire resistant coveralls solution is designed to self-extinguish, resist flame spread and protect the wearer from thermal injury during an incident. The garment will not melt onto skin or continue burning once the ignition source is removed.

pH7 supplies fire resistant suits and fire retardant coveralls to NZ distributors and retailers for use across oil and gas, electrical maintenance, manufacturing, and hazardous chemical processing environments.

Selecting the Right Fire Resistant Coveralls

Not all FR garments are rated equally. Selecting the right fire resistant suit requires an understanding of the specific hazard, the duration and intensity of potential exposure, and whether the risk involves flash fire, arc flash, or a combination of thermal and chemical hazards.

Key considerations include:

  • Hazard type. Flash fire and arc flash require different protection ratings. Garments should be selected against relevant standards such as AS/NZS 4602 for high visibility and flame resistant clothing, or IEC 61482 for arc flash protection.
  • Single-use versus reusable. Fire retardant disposable coveralls suit temporary work, shutdowns or maintenance tasks where laundering is impractical. Reusable fire resistant coveralls are more appropriate for ongoing industrial use.
  • Multi-risk environments. Where workers face both thermal and chemical or particulate hazards, a multi-risk garment that combines FR performance with additional barrier protection may be required.
  • Clean and controlled environments. Clean fire retardant suits are designed for contamination-sensitive settings such as shutdowns and controlled maintenance areas, combining flame resistance with particulate control.

A note on terminology: fireproof coveralls is a term commonly used in search and general conversation, but no garment is entirely fireproof. FR and fire resistant ratings describe a garment’s behaviour under specific test conditions, not absolute protection against all fire hazards.
