RESPIRATOR FIT TESTING

If you wear a close fitting respirator at work, it needs a proper face seal to protect you. AS/NZS 1715 requires respirator fit testing before a mask is first issued and at least every 12 months.

pH7 provides quantitative fit testing in New Zealand for reusable half face and full face respirators, onsite or at our Auckland office. Every staff member who passes receives a certificate valid for 12 months.

Respirator Fit Testing

pH7 provides quantitative respirator fit testing for New Zealand workplaces. We test reusable half face and full face respirators in line with AS/NZS 1715, so every wearer has a mask that seals properly and protects as it should.

Price: $130 per person (up to 10 people), or $115 per person (11 or more people)

  • Quantitative fit testing for reusable half face and full face masks
  • Most major brands tested, including 3M, Shigematsu, Sundström and Moldex
  • Certificates valid for 12 months for all staff who pass
  • Testing at our East Tāmaki office in Auckland, or onsite at your premises

Why does respirator fit testing matter

A respirator only works if it seals against the wearer’s face. Without a tight seal, contaminated air leaks around the edges and the advertised filtration rating, such as P2 or P3, is not achieved. This gives a false sense of security and leaves the wearer at greater risk of exposure.

Faces come in all shapes and sizes. Mask fit testing confirms each person is wearing the right make, model and size of respirator for their face.

Is respirator fit testing required in New Zealand?

Yes. AS/NZS 1715:2009 requires fit testing for anyone who wears a close fitting respirator. Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, businesses must make sure the PPE they provide fits the worker and protects them properly.

When should fit testing be carried out?

Respirator fit testing should be carried out:

  • Before a respirator is first issued, to confirm the correct size and fit
  • At least every 12 months
  • When a worker changes to a different make, model or size of respirator
  • When a worker’s face changes, such as significant weight change, dental work or facial scarring
  • When biological monitoring shows a worker has been exposed to excessive levels of contaminants

How does quantitative fit testing work?

Quantitative fit testing gives an objective, measured result rather than relying on the wearer’s sense of taste or smell. pH7 uses the PortaCount Fit Tester 8048+ with FitPro Ultra software.

The PortaCount measures the concentration of particles in the air outside the mask and compares it to the air inside. The wearer completes a series of exercises, such as deep breathing, turning their head and talking, to simulate real working movements. The result is a fit factor, which shows exactly how well the mask seals.

Which respirators can be tested?

We test reusable half face and full face respirators from most major brands, including 3M, Shigematsu, Sundström and Moldex. We do not test disposable masks.
