FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is a Tobin eyewash system and how does it work?

A Tobin eyewash system is a gravity-fed eyewash solution designed for rapid, controlled flushing of eyes exposed to chemicals, dust, or particulates. Unlike plumbed eyewash stations, Tobin systems use sealed, sterile eyewash bottles delivered through a precision-controlled flow regulator, ensuring a gentle, consistent stream that reduces further eye damage.

Each 1L bottle empties in approximately 3 minutes, so a 5-bottle station will deliver the recommended 15 minutes of flushing.

Tobin’s patented bottle with breakaway breather ensures a constant flow of flushing liquid unlike competing brands which require the user to squeeze the flushing fluid out of the bottle.  Tobin’s unique system ensures a continuous flow and longer flush.

Tobin eyewash systems are ideal for high-risk areas where immediate access to flushing fluid is needed. They also complement plumbed-in shower and eyewash systems as the offer portability for when the patient needs to be transferred to further medical attention.

What types of Tobin eyewash systems are there?

pH7 supplies a complete range of Tobin-branded eyewash solutions, including:

All systems are designed for easy activation, stable flow control, and sterile delivery, ensuring they remain effective even in environments where plumbing is unavailable or unreliable.

What chemicals are Tobin eyewash bottles suitable for?

Tobin eyewash bottles contain sterile 0.9% sodium chloride saline, which is safe for flushing eyes exposed to:

  • Acids and alkalis
  • Solvents and mild corrosives
  • Dust, particulates, and debris
  • Water-soluble chemicals
  • Biological materials and laboratory reagents

While saline eyewash is effective for immediate irrigation, WorkSafe NZ recommends ongoing flushing for at least 15 minutes with a plumbed eyewash or emergency shower when dealing with severe corrosives (e.g. strong acids or caustics). Tobin systems are ideal for the initial response when rapid access is essential.

How long do Tobin eyewash bottles last and how should they be stored?

Tobin bottles have a long shelf life of 3 years from the date of manufacture, provided the seals remain intact and bottles are stored correctly. For best performance:

  • Store at room temperature, away from sunlight or heat.
  • Keep bottles sealed until use to ensure sterility.
  • Inspect monthly for expiry dates, seal integrity, and clarity of the solution.
  • Replace bottles immediately if the seal is broken, the solution appears cloudy, or the unit has been activated.

pH7 supplies full replacement bottle packs, ensuring your eyewash system remains compliant with AS 4775 and internal audit requirements.

How do I use a Tobin eyewash system in an emergency?

Using a Tobin system is quick and intuitive, supporting immediate response in high-risk environments:

For bottles that hang in the wall mounted station (T124, T129, T424, T429):

  1. Pull down the eyewash bottle from the station, this will snap off the top of the bottle.
  2. Place the support ring around the eye and lift the bottle vertically.
  3. Break off the breather tab on the bottom of the bottle.
  4. Tobin systems are designed to deliver a gentle, controlled flow that avoids excessive pressure, reducing the risk of further injury while still removing contaminants effectively.

For bottles that clip into wall mounted stations (T164, T125, T127, T130, T425, T427, T430):

  1. Remove the bottle from the wall mount station.
  2. Use your thumb to break off the top tab.
  1. Place the support ring around the eye and lift the bottle vertically.
  2. Break off the breather tab on the bottom of the bottle.
  3. Tobin systems are designed to deliver a gentle, controlled flow that avoids excessive pressure, reducing the risk of further injury while still removing contaminants effectively.

For the T121 Flask:

  1. Remove the dust cap.
  2. Use your thumb to break off the top tab
  3. Place the support ring around your eye
  4. Lean forward and gently squeeze
