New rules for class 6 and 8 Hazardous Substances

There are some important regulation changes coming into effect from the 1st of June 2019, which are a continuation of the December 2017 hazardous substances law changes.  From the 1st of June 2019 you will need to have an established hazardous substance location (HSL) if you are over the thresholds for class 6 (toxic) and class 8 (corrosive) substances.

If you are storing more than the below thresholds for Class 6 and Class 8 hazardous substances, in liquid or solid form, a HSL must be established.  Thresholds are higher for farms.

Important criteria that will need to be met:

  1. Set up an established hazardous substance location (HSL)
  2. If you use and store class 6 and class 8 substances you must notify WorkSafe, 30 days before setting up your HSL.  Click here to download the notification form.
  3. You will also need obtain a location compliance certificate for the established HSL.  This certificate has to be obtained by the 1st of December 2019 at which point the requirements become mandatory.

All indoor storage cabinets must comply with The Health and Safety at Work (Hazardous Substances) Regulations 2017 clauses 13.36 (requirements for indoor storage cabinets for class 6 substances) and 13.37 (requirements for indoor storage cabinets for class 8 substances).

  • Designed and manufactured to comply with the AS/NZS 4452:1997 (class 6) and AS 3780-2008 (class 8) regulations.
  • 150mm deep liquid light sump
  • Recessed door handle with key lock
  • Sequential self-closing and latching doors
